General Definition of Work

Performs manual work in the collection of bulk refuse, solid and yard waste, operates knuckle boom in the collection of limbs and bulky items, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions

Works as member of a yard waste or bulky item collection crew to load trash, debris, furniture, appliances and yard waste from roadsides.

Works as the ground helper on knuckle boom trucks; rakes and gather limbs for easier collection by the operator; works as helper on flatbed trucks; advances truck to next stop when needed; assists operators in locating debris that is placed on the curbside for collection.

Cleans area around trucks and along roadsides upon completion of collecting debris with equipment.

Substitutes for operators on residential garbage and recycling routes when needed; places roll-out carts on dumping mechanism on packer truck and dumps using hydraulic lift; operates hydraulic packer mechanism.

Substitutes for operators collecting recyclable material from the curbside when needed and assists in baling material for shipment.

Receives and processes landfill tickets.

Any other duties assigned by Supervisor.

Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and / or associates.

Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of working in traffic and with garbage and refuse; ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace in adverse weather conditions; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and lifting and occasionally requires walking and speaking or hearing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).

Special Requirements

Valid commercial driver's license with A endorsement in the State of North Carolina, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
