We are seeking a Environmental Field Scientist to conduct audits of state and local ambient air monitoring stations. You will be responsible for measuring air pollution parameters including particulate matter (PM2.5), lead (Pb), ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and other related pollutants. The position is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, California but is hybrid (work from home up to one day a week, overnight travel, and reporting to the Hayward, CA office).
Candidates must be eligible to obtain access to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency systems and facilities (located in Hayward, CA).
Key Responsibilities
This role requires 50% travel or more—including overnight and air travel—within EPA Region 9 (AZ, CA, HI, NV), primarily during weekdays. A company vehicle will be provided for extensive driving.
Collect filter samples for PM2.5 and lead (Pb) and coordinate shipment to designated laboratories for analysis.
Operate field instruments to conduct on-site analysis of air pollutants including ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
Maintain and troubleshoot air sampling and analytical equipment to ensure optimal performance.
Collaborate with state and local air monitoring teams to schedule side-by-side audits of their operations.
Perform sampling and analysis in full compliance with established protocols.
Draft detailed reports using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
Use Microsoft Excel to organize, visualize, and analyze air quality data.
Required Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalent experience in environmental field sampling (soil, water, or air).
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required; must be able to travel throughout EPA Region 9.
Physically capable of lifting 40 lbs., using ladders, and working at elevated heights in accordance with safety standards.
Comfortable working outdoors in diverse weather conditions including wind, rain, heat, cold, and humidity.
Must successfully complete annual Health and Safety training and medical evaluations.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Must pass an EPA background check to gain access to federal facilities.
Preferred Skills / Experience :
Experience in air sampling and analysis for PM2.5, ozone, or other regulated pollutants.
EPA certifications (PM2.5, TTP) or familiarity with EPA programs such as PEP, Pb-PEP, and NPAP / TTP are preferred.
OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and current 8-hour refresher preferred.
Mechanical aptitude for operating and maintaining analytical instruments.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
Proven ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Exceptional organizational skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
Experience working within DoD, EPA, or other federal environments is a plus.
