  • The OP cooperative began in the Erb Memorial Union in 1967 when a few UO students began posting notes to share rides and gear for outdoor adventures. Since then, the OP has grown into a thriving program of trips, events, gear rentals, resources, bike loans, and self-service maintenance. UO's Outdoor Program is nationally recognized as the premier common adventure program in the country and the birthplace of modern collegiate outdoor programs. The Core Mission of the Outdoor Program is : “To inspire learning through student powered outdoor adventure.” Acting as a wilderness resource center, the program assists students with off campus trips; environmental projects and research; environmental and outdoor recreation career development; outdoor equipment selection; and safety education. The program also provides employment opportunities for students. The five main operations of the program are : Cooperative adventure trips, OP Outings, On campus events and clinics, Gear rentals, Bike program, and Information resource center.

Students participating in OP activities develop in ways beyond outdoor skill development, which are valuable in academic, career, and personal life. Some of these skills are decision and leadership skills, time management skills, environmental awareness, social maturity and confidence, healthy lifestyles and stress reduction, respect for cultural diversity, ability to work with others, and more.
