Position Information Position Title Peer Advisor Department CARES Department Summary The Center for Advocacy, Resources, Education, and Support (CARES) aims to create a healthier campus by providing collaborative services emphasizing holistic care to students’ health and wellness. Through our wide network of programs, initiatives, and student access to Sunrise Clinic, we are creating healthier campuses and addressing the most pressing health needs domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, mental and behavioral health issues, and substance abuse prevention) of the NMHU community. All wellness initiatives focus on assisting students in developing healthy lifestyle choices while creating an institutional wellness culture and developing environments to enhance student success. General Job Description Job description may include technical and specialized duties requiring a high skill level in oral and written communications, critical thinking, initiative, and independent work requiring knowledge of theory, practices and procedures of the assigned area. Analyzing data; Preparing records; Writing reports; Creating videos; Managing confidential information; Maintain regular attendance; and Perform other job duties as assigned. Specific Duties Position Summary : The Student Navigator is pivotal in supporting student success at New Mexico Highlands University by addressing student well-being and basic needs. This position involves providing health and wellness services and overseeing the campus food pantry to ensure students have access to essential resources. Student Navigators serve as energetic and enthusiastic mentors, guiding students through their academic journey while fostering a sense of belonging and community. Key Responsibilities :
- Student Support & Mentorship : Serve as a mentor to help students acclimate to university life and succeed academically and personally. Develop and maintain supportive relationships with students, focusing on their health, wellness, and basic needs. Provide assistance and guidance on a range of topics, including stress management, sleep, sexual health, relationship wellness, substance use, suicide prevention, and more.
- Basic Needs & Food Pantry Oversight : Oversee the operations of the campus food pantry, ensuring it meets the needs of students facing food insecurity. Collaborate with campus and community partners to maintain a well-stocked pantry and promote its services to students. Develop initiatives and programs to address the broader basic needs of students, including housing, food security, and financial stability.
- Program Development & Delivery : Contribute to the development of programs focused on health, wellness, and basic needs, including topics like alcohol and drug education, sexual health, nutrition, mental health, and diversity. Deliver programs through various campus venues, including presentations, awareness campaigns, small group facilitation, and more. Plan and facilitate activities that engage students and promote a sense of community and well-being.
- Collaboration & Communication : Collaborate with CARES Staff and other campus departments to ensure a coordinated approach to student support. Establish and maintain open communication channels with students, acting as a reliable resource for their needs. Attend training workshops and regular meetings to stay informed on best practices in student support.
- Administrative Duties : Hold regular office hours to meet with students for mentoring and support. Maintain accurate records of student interactions and program activities as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned to support student success.
