The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Heluna Health seek a highly skilled Intern and Fellowship Coordinator to support an Intern and Fellowship program specifically committed to a public health laboratory curriculum. Under the supervision of the Laboratory Operations Section Chief, the Coordinator will recruit and support interns and fellows at the CDPH Public Health Laboratories in their training as the next generation of laboratory scientists.

The position will coordinate recruitment, outreach, and training opportunities, and support the establishment and maintenance of partnerships among the public health laboratory (PHL) community, as well as academic, federal, state, and local public health laboratory partners, associated vendors, and professional laboratory organizations. Responsibilities include promotion of Public Health Laboratory careers through fellowship and internship programs including underrepresented communities and in collaboration with APHL Career Pathways staff to generate content about experiential learning activities for communication to academic partners and stakeholders.

Salary range for this position is $74,544 to $89,500 per year depending on experience / qualifications.

Essential functions include :

• Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract qualified fellows and interns. Manage the recruitment and selection process of fellows and interns including development of outreach strategies, interviews, and communication with applicants. Review applications, conduct interviews, and select candidates in collaboration with laboratory staff.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for fellows and interns. Develop a welcome program including opportunities for bonding and social activities. Ensure a successful mentor match for interns and fellows and ongoing support to address any concerns or challenges they may encounter.
• Design and conduct orientation and on-boarding programs to familiarize fellows and interns with laboratory policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Ensure all necessary documentation and training are completed prior to the start of the fellowship or internship.
• Coordinate with academic institutions and professional organizations to promote fellowship and internship opportunities. Build and maintain relationships with colleges, universities, graduate and professional schools focused on public health, laboratory science, and allied health.
• Participate in local and regional career fairs to promote career pathways in public health laboratory fellowship and internship programs in the community. Coordinate with CLS laboratories in development of recruitment materials including flyers, posters, banners, and other materials including digital resources to build interest in the public health laboratory field. Conduct outreach to high schools and community colleges to interest students and teachers in public health laboratory career opportunities.
• Develop and coordinate training programs, workshops, seminars, and other educational activities to promote professional development and enhance the skills and knowledge of fellows and interns. Ensure opportunities for interns and fellows to take advantage of state-of-the-art laboratory resources while working with top public health laboratory experts.
• Collaborate with APHL Training and Workforce Development staff to support fellow and intern curriculum. Organize workshops, seminars, and other educational activities to promote professional development.
• Monitor the progress and performance of fellows and interns, providing regular feedback and evaluations. Maintain accurate records of fellows and interns, including attendance, performance evaluations, and project outcomes. Coordinate with laboratory staff to ensure fellows and interns are assigned meaningful and relevant projects.
• Prepare regular reports on the status and outcomes of the fellowship and internship programs on at least a quarterly basis. Conduct evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the programs and identify areas for improvement. Provide recommendations for program enhancements based on feedback from fellows, interns, and laboratory staff.
• Recommend revisions to policies and procedures. Assist with the development of academic program materials to meet departmental goals. Assist in identifying benchmarks and anticipating barriers. Support interim and long-term project plans to maintain an ongoing pool of qualified fellows and interns at the CDPH public health laboratories.
