Assistant Project Engineer (Summer Intern)

As a Summer Project Engineer Intern, you will have a fantastic opportunity to learn about a career path of engineer, superintendent, or a project manager while gaining the critical hands-on experience. You will be assigned to work on a commercial construction project site, where you will receive ongoing training with a project manager.

At O'Neil, you will gain experience in the following areas :

  • Assist superintendent and project manager in creating, updating, and maintaining the project critical path schedule.
  • Review the procurement schedule for the project. This involves tracking, expediting, and processing all subcontractor / vendor shop drawings and submittals through the approval process to ensure that equipment and materials are delivered to the job when required.
  • Maintain project documentation and expedite to the owner, architect, and engineers for approval. Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the provisions and requirements of all contract documents, including plans, specifications, owner's contract, subcontracts and purchase orders.
  • Assist in the procurement of equipment and materials, and track and expedite their delivery.
  • Calculating and maintaining self-performed work quantity and cost information for the purpose of tracking project costs versus budgets and establishing historical cost data.

Skills, knowledge, and expertise :

  • Technical Skills
  • Assist with job office set up
  • Assist the project team with the initial set up of CMiC, i.e. Submittal Log Registry
  • Prepare and maintain Submittal Logs
  • Assist the project team with the initial set up of PlanGrid to organize the contract documents for the teams use
  • Assist the project team with managing progress photo documentation via utilizing PlanGrid
  • Assist in entering RFI's in CMiC and the distribution to appropriate project team members
  • Prepare and maintain RFI Logs in CMiC
  • Assist in posting RFI's to Contract Documents and maintaining the accuracy of the projects as-builts
  • Assist with updating the Material Procurement Log and assist with expediting the procurement of all materials / equipment
  • Work with the projects PE(s), SPE(s) and APM(s) to compile contract close out documents (O&M manuals, As-Builts, etc.)
  • Attend project meetings and assist in the preparation / distribution of meeting minutes
  • Assist in the creation and organization of all closeout binders
  • Assist the project team with meeting minutes as needed
  • Management Skills
  • Assist with the procurement of close out submittals
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of punch lists and weekly maintenance in PlanGrid
  • Assist the Superintendent(s) with the maintenance of schedules
  • Assist in the procurement of all front-end Submittals
  • Assist in the Material Procurement process. Follow up with Subcontractors and Material Suppliers to ensure timely material deliveries to the site

  • Qualifications :
  • This is an entry-level position designed for undergraduate students and current employees who desire to grow into a management role (project management, superintending, scheduling, safety, etc.)
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Basic understanding of scheduling and CMiC applications
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Understanding of the basic construction administration processes, including construction documents, schedules, RFIs, submittals and material procurement

    Physical Demands : Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to use construction personnel hoists, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas under construction, when visiting a WEO job site. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.     Work Environment : While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in one of WEO's California regional offices and on occasion may be required to visit the construction work site where the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise in these work environments is usually moderate to very loud.
