Overview

The Risk Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing Cavender’s enterprise risk management programs across retail stores, distribution centers, and corporate functions. This role partners with executive leadership, legal, HR, store management, and insurance providers to safeguard the company’s assets, operations, and reputation. Key areas of focus include financial and operational risk, claims and insurance management, safety and compliance, and crisis and business continuity planning. This individual will support a risk-aware culture and drive actionable insights to mitigate current and emerging threats.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the “Cavender’s Culture” and drive our Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize operational, financial, reputational, and legal risks.
  • Conduct periodic risk assessments and audits across all business units.
  • Collaborate with Finance to assess exposure related to bank notes, budget planning, profit interests, and financial operations.
  • Monitor industry trends and regulatory updates to proactively adapt strategies.
  • Manage insurance programs including general liability, workers’ compensation, property, auto, cyber, and D&O.
  • Administer claims processes, including medical evaluations, communication with legal, evidence preservation, and coordination with stores and adjusters.
  • Analyze claim trends and develop programs to reduce incidents and claim costs.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of crisis management and business continuity plans.
  • Coordinate response efforts for critical incidents such as natural disasters, cyber threats, or store closures.
  • Conduct regular tabletop exercises and emergency drills to maintain preparedness.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, ADA, DOT, and other applicable federal / state / local regulations.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Store Managers, and HR to support safety training, emergency protocols, and loss prevention.
  • Investigate incidents including injury, theft, fraud, and policy violations.
  • Partner with Legal on insurance contract negotiations, risk clauses, and litigation strategy.
  • Support vendor risk evaluations and contract reviews for potential liabilities.
  • Deliver risk reports and dashboards to executive leadership to inform decision-making.
  • Reconcile insurance-related general ledger accounts and ensure accurate reserve tracking.
  • Coordinate insurance-related audits, providing necessary documentation and analysis.
  • Support finance audits and risk reviews impacting budgeting and forecasting.
  • Assist with special projects and process improvements to enhance the risk function.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field (Master’s or certifications such as ARM, CRM, or CPCU preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in risk management, insurance, safety, or compliance in a retail, logistics, or multi-site environment.
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment tools, financial modeling, and internal controls.
  • Preferred Skills

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to effectively influence cross-functional teams.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with risk management software, incident tracking systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to store and distribution locations across Cavender’s footprint.
