Description

Overview

The Welder performs skilled work joining metal parts using a variety of welding processes to fabricate or repair components according to specifications, blueprints, or drawings. Ensures structural integrity and compliance with safety and quality standards while operating in a shop or field environment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a single-level job classification that is not a part of job series.

Essential Functions

  • Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, and technical documents to determine weld requirements.
  • Operates manual and / or semi-automatic welding equipment using processes such as MIG, TIG, arc, and oxy-acetylene welding.
  • Positions, aligns, and secures components for welding using clamps, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Performs quality inspections on completed welds and structures to ensure compliance with specifications and codes.
  • Repairs or fabricates metal parts and structures such as frames, braces, brackets, pipes, and beams.
  • Operates grinders, cutting torches, and other metalworking tools to prepare materials for welding or finishing.Follows safety procedures, wear appropriate PPE, and ensure a clean and hazard-free work environment.

  • Maintains tools, equipment, and documentation of work performed.
  • Collaborates with supervisors, engineers, and other fabricators to resolve welding challenges.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a skilled welder, preferably in structural, pipe, or fabrication work.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification from AWS (American Welding Society) or other recognized body.
  • Experience with structural or pipe welding.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience that results in the successful performance of the job. Additional education may substitute for required experience on one-for-one year basis or vice versa.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of common welding standards and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, AWS).
  • Proficient in reading blueprints and understanding welding symbols.
  • Skill in operating manual and / or semi-automatic welding equipment.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace while managing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to commit to safety and quality standards in all aspects of the job.
  • Work Environment

  • Heavy work environment. Continuous indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, and / or emotional hazardous environment. Work requires lifting 50 pounds or more and wearing protective equipment; exposure to extreme weather, noise, hazard; requiring climbing, crawling, lying, and working under pressure.
