We are seeking a Scientist to support the National Institutes of Health's (NIH), world renowned National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities

  • Produce, rescue and propagate recombinant viruses using cell lines.
  • Perform neutralization assays and hemagglutinin inhibition assays with viruses.
  • Culture and maintain cell lines.
  • Organize and maintain sample inventories.
  • Conduct research including planning and conducting experiments and data analysis.
  • Assist in training other contracted staff and students as directed by the federal task leader on the methods and procedures used in the laboratory.
  • Locate and review literature pertinent to projects and identify / modify the most applicable protocols and methods for experiments.
  • Develop methods to collect, organize, and record experimental data suitable for publication.
  • Troubleshoot assays and adjust scientific methodology to correct problems or deficiencies in a research project, experiment, or trial.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records to ensure proper retention of scientific data.
  • Collaborate with automation experts to streamline high throughput influenza analyses.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree or Master's degree in Virology, Immunology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in Virology or a related field.
  • Experience in virus production and rescue.
  • Experience performing neutralization assays.
  • Experience working with influenza viruses strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrates experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and provides technical assistance to other NIH departments for influenza vaccine design and development.
  • Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in a BSL-2 laboratory.

  • Must have depth perception, distinguish basic colors and perform repetitive activities.
  • Ability to work alone and closely with others, and work in shifts.
  • Will be required to be in contact with human blood or other body fluids.
  • Will have contact with HIV-1, HIV-2, MMR viruses, and Varicella virus.
  • Will work with aerosols, biological inhalants, corrosive substances, plastics, and solvents.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, face shields / goggles, safety glasses, lab coat and disposable dust / surgical mask.
