Position Summary
The QA / QC Boat Test & Inspection Technician is responsible for ensuring Tig Boats meet quality, safety, and performance standards both in production and on the water. This role blends Quality Assurance expertise with hands-on operational testing to prevent defects, verify assembly accuracy, and validate that each boat delivers the intended performance and customer experience.
The position includes in-process inspections during production, detailed pre-lake evaluations, and operational water testing to assess systems, handling, and finish surf quality. The QA / QC Boat Test & Inspection Technician works closely with Production, Engineering, and Quality teams to identify nonconformities, recommend corrective actions, and assist in developing SOPs, inspection criteria, and test protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- In-Plant Quality Oversight :
- Conduct inspections during and after assembly stages including hull bonding, deck join, hardware installation, mechanical / electrical systems, and interior installation.
- Verify alignment, torque, sealant application, wiring routing, plumbing connections, and finish quality.
- Identify potential failure points before the boat reaches water testing.
- Pre-Lake Quality Verification :
- Perform pre-test checklist inspections to confirm all safety, electrical, and mechanical systems are correctly installed and operational.
- Review fluid levels, battery condition, steering and throttle operation, and control calibration.
- Ensure all required equipment, paperwork, and documentation are present before launch.
- On-Water Testing :
- Operate boats under varied load and speed conditions to assess :
Engine performance, acceleration, idle stability, and top speed.
Steering responsiveness, tracking, vibration levels, and handling characteristics.Operation of gauges, electronics, and onboard systems.Effectiveness of ballast, surf, and wake shaping systems.Document handling characteristics, performance benchmarks, and any abnormalities.Record lake test data for QA tracking and trend analysis.Quality Assurance System Support :Assist in the creation and revision of lake test protocols, inspection checklists, and acceptance criteria.Support root cause analysis and corrective action development for defects found during water testing.Participate in continuous improvement activities, providing feedback to Production and Engineering.Contribute to the development and refinement of SOPs covering both in-plant inspections and water tests.Nonconformance Management :Document, classify, and report nonconformities discovered in-plant or during testing.Coordinate with Quality Engineer and Production to implement immediate containment actions.Verify corrective actions during retesting or follow-up inspections.Cross-Functional Collaboration :Work directly with Lake Test personnel, Production teams, and Engineering to resolve quality issues quickly.Provide feedback to ensure recurring issues are addressed at the source, not downstream.Participate in daily quality huddles and production planning meetings.Documentation and Reporting :
Complete in-process inspection reports, lake test forms, and nonconformance reports accurately and on time.Maintain traceable inspection and test records linked to each boats hull number.Capture photographic or video evidence of defects for training and RCA purposes.Compliance, Safety & Workplace Culture :
Operate boats in compliance with safety protocols, boating regulations, and company policies.Follow PPE requirements for both in-plant and on-water activities.Maintain safe and organized workspaces in QA areas, dock zones, and lake testing facilities.Report unsafe conditions or practices immediately.Minimum Qualifications :
Education : High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.Experience :2+ years in a QA / QC role in manufacturing, preferably marine, automotive, or aerospace.
Proven boat handling and operational testing experience, including launch, docking, and varied performance runs.Skills :Strong knowledge of marine systems, mechanical assembly, and electrical diagnostics.
Ability to identify, document, and communicate quality issues effectively.Proficient with inspection tools, measurement devices, and performance data logging.Comfortable operating boats in various weather and water conditions.Capable of interpreting drawings, schematics, and SOPs.Work Environment :
Active production floor and dockside testing environments.Exposure to adhesives, resins, electrical systems, and outdoor elements.Requires standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.Frequent operation of boats in fresh water under test conditions.Performance Expectations :
