Heavy Equipment Operator - Oil and Gas Well Plugging and Abandonment Projects

Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a variety of heavy construction equipment used in oil and gas well plugging, abandonment, and site restoration projects. This position plays a key role in the field team, supporting excavation, grading, well access preparation, demolition, backfilling, and reclamation work while maintaining strict adherence to safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations
- Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, dozers, skid steers, graders, and loaders in support of well plugging and abandonment (PandA) activities.
- Perform excavation around wellheads, pipelines, and other underground utilities with precision and care.
- Load, haul, and place soil, gravel, and other materials as directed.
- Assist with pad preparation, containment berms, and restoration grading after well abandonment.
- Support demolition and removal of well-site facilities, foundations, and equipment.
- Maintain awareness of jobsite hazards and operate equipment in compliance with all safety standards and procedures.
- Work closely with foremen, laborers, and other operators to complete field tasks efficiently and safely.
- Follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors and communicate effectively about site conditions.
- Assist with other duties as needed, including general labor and site cleanup.
Safety and Compliance
Participate in daily safety and tailgate meetings; complete Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) before starting tasks.Follow company and regulatory safety protocols (Cal / OSHA, CalGEM, DOT, EPA, etc.).Report all near misses, unsafe conditions, and incidents immediately.Ensure equipment is operated within manufacturer guidelines and project-specific safety requirements.Equipment Maintenance
Conduct daily pre- and post-operation inspections and document equipment condition.Clean, grease, and perform basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.Notify supervisors of any mechanical issues, needed repairs, or unsafe conditions.Physical Requirements :
Ability to lift and move up to 75 lbs. regularly.Stand, climb, kneel, or bend for extended periods.Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug / alcohol testing and physical exams per DOT regulations as applicable.Qualifications
Required :
Minimum 3-5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction, oilfield, or environmental projects. Proficient with excavators, dozers, backhoes, and / or loaders.
