Summary :
We’re seeking a hands-on, experienced Controller to lead financial operations in a dynamic construction / manufacturing environment. This individual will be responsible for managing all aspects of financial operations, including reporting, budgeting, AR / AP, payroll, and contract billing. The ideal candidate brings a strategic mindset with attention to operational detail and has deep industry knowledge in construction and project-based costing. This role will be instrumental in enhancing financial reporting processes, ensuring compliance, and driving cost control improvements company wide.
Responsibilities :
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, industry regulations, and internal company policies.
- Lead preparation and presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Oversee AR / AP, payroll processing (including union and hourly), and contractor billing.
- Improve and streamline financial reporting systems, workflows, and procedures.
- Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and financial models with input from department leaders.
- Analyze and monitor project costs, margins, and job costing to ensure profitability and accuracy.
- Support decision-making with timely financial insights and strategic recommendations.
- Maintain financial systems including Sage 300, Paylocity, and Timberline for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure internal controls are effectively designed and maintained to safeguard company assets.
- Collaborate with production and HR teams on payroll, labor costing, and financial analysis.
- Mentor and manage accounting staff, supporting their growth and professional development.
- Conduct variance analysis and investigate deviations from budgeted performance.
- Travel occasionally to our Indianapolis location to support operations and align financial practices.
- Foster a culture of financial accountability and continuous improvement across departments.
- Evaluate and recommend financial technology improvements to increase transparency, automation, and accuracy in reporting.
- Support compliance with tax laws, insurance audits, and industry regulations, identifying areas of risk and ensuring mitigation strategies are in place.
- Design scalable financial infrastructure to support future growth, expansion, and acquisition opportunities.
- Develop and maintain financial KPIs to monitor business health and help leadership make data-informed decisions.
Requirements :
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA preferred.7+ years of progressive financial leadership in a construction or manufacturing setting.Hands-on experience with payroll, AR / AP, general ledger, and financial reporting.Expertise in job costing, billing, and project-based financial management.Proficiency with financial software systems including Sage 300, Timberline, and Paylocity.Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.High ethical standards, self-directed, and results oriented.Experience managing and mentoring accounting teams.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.Familiarity with union payroll and related compliance is a plus.
