Position Overview
MDC is seeking a Director of Preconstruction to oversee estimating and preconstruction operations across all company offices. This strategic leader will manage a team of 7–8 estimators and 1 precon coordinator, ensuring every bid is well-prepared, competitive, and aligned with company goals. The role requires strong familiarity with the Texas market, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to driving process and performance.
Key Responsibilities :
- Oversee all estimating and bidding efforts companywide, including both public and private work
- Lead the development and submission of RFQs, RFPs, and proposals
- Develop bid strategies with the estimating team to position MDC competitively against the field of potential bidders
- Collaborate with business development, operations, and marketing teams to pursue and win work
- Win work at acceptable profit margins to ensure a healthy backlog for each company within the MDC brand
- Coach and support estimators in developing scopes, pricing, sub coverage, and competitive strategies
- Ensure smooth project handoffs to operations teams
- Interface with owners, architects, and engineers throughout preconstruction phases
- Refine and enforce standard operating procedures and tools across teams
- Ensure effective use of systems, including SmartBid, HeavyBid, PlanSwift, and BuildR
- Monitor and guide the bid calendar, resource planning, and team workload
Qualifications :
10+ years of experience in construction with a focus on estimating / preconstruction3+ years in a leadership or management capacityDeep knowledge of the Texas construction market, especially in civil / site development and vertical scopesFamiliarity with public bidding, agency requirements, and negotiated / private workProficient in SmartBid, HeavyBid, PlanSwift, and CRM systems (BuildR preferred)Collaborative, process-driven leader with strong communication skillsMust be willing to travel regularly to MDC offices (Houston, Dallas, Austin, etc.)To be considered for this role, please complete our 2-part survey at the following link :
