Construction Equipment Operator
Under general supervision, operates and maintains portable and self-propelled construction machines. Examples of duties include operating construction equipment consistent with departmental standards and procedures, operating construction equipment in a variety of construction and maintenance projects, coordinating with grounds crews the efficient sequence of operations, changing attachments on equipment, performing minor maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment, directing the activities of helpers assisting in construction activities, repairing and / or assisting in overhauling construction equipment during inclement weather or as required, performing duties in accordance with department safety procedures, performing demolition of site equipment, fencing, and various other blighted or outdated components, assisting building trades workers in constructing or deconstructing when heavy equipment is needed for installation or removal, operating heavy equipment to move boulders or other landscape products, loading, unloading and securing equipment from trucks and trailers safely, hauling equipment and trailer with a dump truck, pick-up truck or other appropriate vehicle, and hauling and dumping debris at appropriate disposal / recycling locations.
Minimum Qualifications : High school graduation or GED, preferably completion of two years in a trade or vocational high school. Two years of experience operating portable, self-propelled construction machines and one year of experience maintaining and repairing construction machinery. Licensing and Certifications : Valid State of Michigan Chauffeur License and Commercial Driver License with Group A Designation and Air Brake Endorsement. A current valid Medical Examiner's Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier safety Act of 1998.
