Section 1 - Position Summary

This position, under limited direction of the Environmental Supervisor, performs scheduled and emergency response sampling and monitoring of industrial wastewater, potable water, wastewater, and surface water. Also responsible for conducting field studies and taking field measurements as required. Performs manual work associated with various assigned duties.

Section 2 - Major Responsibilities

• Performs field analyses according to standard operating procedures, including but not limited to flow, pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and residual chlorine on water and wastewater samples.
• Collects compliance and routine monitoring samples for laboratory analyses on water and wastewater samples at water distribution sites, surface water sites, industrial users, treatment plants, or collection system.
• Reviews field observations and data for accuracy and thoroughness and generates chains-of-custody for sampling events.
• Oversees operation of field sampling and monitoring equipment and troubleshoots when needed.
• Assists in training department personnel in technical and safety procedures including boating, trailering, flow, and Surface Water Quality Monitoring procedures.
• Revises standard operating procedures and work instructions as needed.
• Leads on-site during emergency response procedures related to accidental spills and / or discharges into the sanitary sewer, ground, or receiving streams or lakes and completes response forms which may include classifying fish species.
• Participates in audits by partnering agencies including demonstrating proper technique.
• Assists in selecting sites for future monitoring projects and recommends improvements to procedures.
• Leads stream characterization studies and completes reports for TPDES permit renewals as needed.
• Assists in monitoring and surveillance activities of the collection system which may include visual observations, dye testing, sample collection, etc.
• Maintains daily logs and calibrations and performs tasks which require mathematical calculations.
• Observes safe work practices through the proper use of safety equipment and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

This position requires moderate physical exertion with occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. General mobility required to conduct field sampling. Working conditions include exposure to weather, chemical hazards and gases. Equipment used includes vehicles, boats, kayaks, computers / tablets, automatic samplers, field-testing equipment and some laboratory equipment.
