Job Description : Controls Engineer

Location : Houston, TX

Employment Type : Full-Time

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Controls Engineer to design, develop, and implement control systems for a wide range of automated and industrial equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in electrical, automation, and control technologies, with the ability to integrate hardware and software solutions to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations.

This role requires a hands-on engineer who can take projects from concept through commissioning, including system design, programming, troubleshooting, and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Development

Design and implement control systems for automated machinery, equipment, and manufacturing processes.

  • Develop control logic and programming for PLCs, HMIs, and IO systems.
  • Specify and configure instrumentation, sensors, actuators, VFDs, and other automation components.
  • Project Execution
  • Lead control system projects from requirements gathering through commissioning.

  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate controls with equipment design.
  • Prepare technical documentation, wiring diagrams, and system architecture drawings.
  • Testing & Commissioning
  • Conduct system testing, debugging, and performance tuning.

  • Oversee on-site installation, startup, and commissioning of automated equipment.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting during and after deployment.
  • Compliance & Standards
  • Ensure all control systems meet applicable safety, industry, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, NEC, IEC, API as applicable).

  • Maintain documentation for system validation, change control, and compliance audits.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, efficiency, and maintainability.

  • Stay updated with new technologies in automation, robotics, and control systems.
  • Qualifications

  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • Experience :
  • 3–7 years of experience in controls / automation engineering, preferably in industrial equipment or manufacturing.

  • Hands-on experience with PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar), HMIs, SCADA, and industrial networking.
  • Familiarity with CAD software for control panel and wiring.
  • Skills :
  • Strong knowledge of industrial control systems, automation hardware, and programming languages (ladder logic, structured text, function block, etc.).

  • Solid understanding of electrical systems, instrumentation, and control panel design.
  • Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and project management skills.
  • Other : Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed for project commissioning and support.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in oil & gas, heavy equipment manufacturing, or process industries.
  • Knowledge of safety systems (SIL-rated controls, functional safety standards).
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or Engineer in Training (E.I.T)
