Job Description Summary

Seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a Senior Staff Scientist position in a cancer research laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina. Current work in the laboratory is centered on cellular signaling related to hypoxia and drug resistance in prostate cancer. Research in the laboratory is focused on two major areas : 1. The role if PIM kinases in tumor metastasis; and 2. Discovery of novel hypoxia targeting agents.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. with considerable experience in molecular biology biochemistry cell biology and experience in utilizing in vivo models of prostate cancer and surgical techniques. The selected candidate should have a strong track record in publishing high impact research as well as a history of training and oversight of graduate students postdoctoral fellows and other research staff. The candidate will be expected to lead independent research projects and assist with the development of research proposals for external research funding from both federal and private agencies. The candidate will also be expected to present his / her work at lab meetings departmental retreats national / international scientific conferences and publish his / her findings in collaboration with the PI in high impact scientific journals.

Applicants must be eligible for employment in the U.S. This is a non tenure-track position with renewal dependent on continued availability of extramural funding. Salary range is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Requirements :

Ph.D. or equivalent with 5 years post doctorate experience plus evidence of scholarly activity as demonstrated by at least 5 first-author publications.

Job Duties :

Develop an independent research project in consultation with the PI (30%) . The individual will be responsible for the design and implementation of experiments in the area of signaling transduction and cancer

biology. This will include a review of current scientific literature maintain meticulous laboratory records and presenting these results to PI in individual and group meetings. The individual will be responsible for drafting and publication of results in leading scientific journals and will work closely with PI to develop research grant proposals.

Perform in vivo experiments to assess drug efficacy and differential biology in prostate cancer (30%). The individual will be lead in vitro and in vivo testing of novel inhibitors identified and developed by the lab and its collaborators. This includes orthotopic models of prostate cancer and bone orthotopic models of metastasis. The individual will have experience performing pK studies urological surgeries in mice and all modalities of drug delivery including intraperitoneal oral gavage retro-orbital and tail vein injections among others as well as necropsy and tissue collection from primary and distant organs.

Training and supervision of technical staff graduate students and other laboratory personnel (30%). The individual should have experience mentoring students. This includes oversight of equipment developing written protocols of experimental techniques advising and assisting junior members of the laboratory on experimental approaches.

Lab management (10%). The individual will have experience with oversight of daily lab needs activity and budgeting. This includes but is not limited to maintaining databases of laboratory reagents cell lines and ordering supplies.
