Role of the Position

University Police Department (UPD) is conducting a continuous recruitment for current and future openings for Retired Public Safety Dispatcher I. Positions may be assigned to any campus to include the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

UPD Public Safety Dispatchers serve as the gateway to and for emergency personnel for all NSHE Campuses in Clark County and coordinate responses with police, fire, medical and other emergency agencies. The public safety dispatcher is the centralized point of contact to gather information and direct emergency response agencies within the jurisdiction of UPD. Under general supervision, the public safety dispatcher receives, evaluates, prioritizes and dispatches public safety calls for service and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls in a timely and appropriate manner.

The public safety dispatcher operates a variety of communications equipment including radio, telephone, telephony, TDD and multiple computer systems and relays data into the computer aided dispatch (CAD) program. Public safety dispatchers access and correlate information from the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) database as well as the Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS) to provide criminal history information for wanted persons or items, along with other sensitive information necessary for the Police Department to perform their daily activities for the University and College community. The public safety dispatcher monitors all fire and burglar alarms to all buildings and offices on campus. The public safety dispatcher accesses the closed circuit television (CCTV) or security video cameras on campus. The dispatch center is operated 24 / 7, 365 days a year for routine and emergency calls for service. They also handle all after hours maintenance calls and contacts for the University.

Department Information

The department is a full-service police department comprised of patrol operations, administration, police dispatch and a detective division. Services include a canine program, walking and bicycle patrols, and a pro-active, selective traffic enforcement program and takes a leadership role in preparing the University to respond to large-scale crises and events. The patrol area for UPD encompasses all Nevada System of Higher Education facilities in the Las Vegas Metropolitan area.

University Police Department, Southern Command, is a full service category I law enforcement agency that serves the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, the Desert Research Institute and Nevada State College. The department consists of 112 employees and has responsibility for the public safety needs of 80,000 students, faculty and staff over an 800 square mile service area. Law enforcement operations consists of 73 full and part time sworn peace officers, a full service 9-1-1 Center, K-9 operations; emergency management operations with a fully functional EOC and oversight of major special events hosting more than a million visitors a year to various events.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from high school or the equivalent and two years' experience in clerical, data entry, telephone switchboard or radio telephone work; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience can be substituted for high school education.

Special Requirements

  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • Some positions required working on evening, weekends, and / or holidays.
  • A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Informational Notes :

  • Incumbents must pass the NCIC certification examination within six months of appointment and every two years thereafter as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum typing speed established by the agency at the time of recruitment.

  • Salary

    Public Safety Dispatcher I - Grade 27 Step 1, salary $46,666.80. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
