General Functions : Perform a wide range of duties related to the underwriting of consumer bank initiated residential real estate requests across multiple states. Render an underwriting decision within the banks credit guidelines while ensuring compliance with federal lending regulations. Handle complex underwriting decisions requiring senior knowledge and unique problem solving abilities. Functions as an escalation point for decisions requiring higher level of knowledge and authority. Responsible for ensuring production levels of the team are met and also ensuring credit quality meets all defined standards.

While operating within the Bank's risk appetite, achieve results by consistently identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, and reporting risks of all types.

Duties and Responsibilities :

• Analyze consumer credit reports for Consumer Lending real estate applications to evaluate risk and make appropriate credit decision for Direct Lending across multiple states, markets or geographic regions.
• Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the continual enhancements and changes to the Fifth Third Consumer Lending policy and procedures in order to ensure consistent treatment of all real estate applications.
• Ability to analyze complex loan requests including cash flow analyst of business and personal tax returns.
• Coach, develop, and support other underwriters.
• Analyze quality and audit results. Identify and implement practices that improve overall efficiency and quality of individual's performance and overall process.
• Manage application pipeline to meet business objectives and stated Service Level Agreements.
• Responsible for ensuring completeness and accuracy of real estate credit application.
• Responsible for ensuring HMDA purpose codes are accurate before rendering a final decision.
• Evaluate customer provided credit documents to support credit decision, including calculation of income, personal financial statement reviews, trust reviews, etc.
• Place orders for bank obtained credit documents in accordance with real estate policy guidelines, and partners with retail and borrower to clear condition with regards to Property Reports, Appraisals, and Flood Certifications.
• Formulate and communicates credit decision (approve, decline or counteroffer) in compliance with established underwriting guidelines, compliance and regulatory requirements.
• Provide technical support for underwriters related to direct loan systems as well as perform UAT for system changes.
• Actively participate in ongoing efforts to continually improve customer experience for internal and external customers.
• Demonstrate a complete and thorough understanding of the credit exception process. Lead and train other underwriter to identify opportunities with applications and understand the relevant compensating factors.
• Partner with the Mortgage Line of Business to underwrite simultaneous first and second lien real estate loan requests.
• Assist in resolving policy and procedure related escalations.
• Develop business relationships and build rapport with internal customers across multiple states to achieve mutual goals.
• Host side by side visits for bank employees to both gain an understanding of our processes and to help build interest in our department and identify possible candidates for filling future needs.
• Demonstrate the ability to be a team player by providing superior customer service, being flexible and approachable.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Responsible for providing employee timely, candid and constructive performance feedback; developing employees to their fullest potential and provide challenging opportunities that enhance employee career growth; developing the appropriate talent pool to ensure adequate bench strength and succession planning; recognizing and rewarding employees for accomplishments.

The base salary for this position is reflective of the range of salary levels for all roles within this pay grade across the U.S. Individual salaries within this range will vary based on factors such as role, relevant skillset, relevant experience, education and geographic location. In addition to the base salary, this role is eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan, with any such payment based upon company, line of business and / or individual performance.
