Job Title : AI / ML Engineer – Document Intelligence

Location : Washington, DC (Hybrid)

Department : Development

Overview :

We are seeking a mission-driven AI / ML Engineer to lead innovation in automated document intelligence, extraction, redaction, and summarization of legacy medical records and sensitive government documents. You will architect and deploy advanced AI / ML solutions—ranging from image enhancement pipelines to form extraction and OCR to Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems—to support automation across public sector, healthcare, eDiscovery, and cybersecurity domains.

This role centers on building scalable, production-grade pipelines that can extract structured data, clean and interpret degraded documents, redact sensitive content (PII, PHI, classified information), and generate insights from large volumes of unstructured records. Your solutions will power document search, summarization, and redaction use cases across FOIA, HIPAA, litigation, cybersecurity, and records modernization initiatives.

Responsibilities :

  • Design, build, and deploy scalable, production-grade AI / ML pipelines to :

Detect and extract structured data from scanned and handwritten forms

  • Enhance degraded documents through image preprocessing and OCR technologies
  • Automatically identify and redact sensitive information (PII, PHI, classified content) at scale
  • Summarize complex long-form documents (e.g., case files, medical records, legal exhibits) using large language models (LLMs)
  • Enable secure, explainable document search through Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
  • Prototype and evaluate advanced techniques in GenAI, redaction QA, agentic automation, and document intelligence
  • Own quality assurance for OCR, redaction, extraction accuracy, and LLM performance
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, compliance, and customer teams to deliver technically sound, scalable solutions
  • Integrate AI pipelines with third-party data platforms and government back-office systems
  • Stay current on advances in GenAI, computer vision, NLP, and federal regulatory frameworks affecting AI in sensitive domains
  • Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience building and deploying production-grade AI / ML or NLP systems
  • Strong proficiency in Python and common ML / AI frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, HuggingFace Transformers, spaCy, LangChain)
  • Experience deploying models via REST APIs, containerized environments (e.g., Docker), or cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with OCR technologies (e.g., Tesseract, Amazon Textract), computer vision, and document parsing (including PDF processing and form extraction)
  • Proven experience with automated redaction, form recognition, and structured data extraction from scanned or handwritten documents
  • Experience with large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, GenAI-based summarization, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems
  • Familiarity with designing and scaling cloud-based AI workflows and pipelines
  • Demonstrated ability to lead ambiguous technical projects and collaborate across cross-functional teams
  • S. Citizen eligible for a Public Trust clearance or higher
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with regulated data environments (e.g., VA, healthcare, public sector) and familiarity with HIPAA, FOIA, or similar frameworks
  • Proven track record of building and deploying production-grade ML / NLP models, including OCR, redaction, or summarization pipelines
  • End-to-end ownership of data pipelines and AI solutions, from design to deployment in real-world applications
  • Leadership in cross-functional initiatives, with experience mentoring team members and driving technical direction
  • Current federal employment or contractor with Public Trust clearance or higher
