Overview

The Director of Perioperative Services influences all aspects of the perioperative care continuum, including anesthesia services, pre-admission testing, surgery scheduling, post-anesthesia care, GI and endo procedural areas, ambulatory care, and sterile supply across the system. Reporting to the System Chief Medical Officer, this leader regularly collaborates with physician consultants, anesthesiologists, and surgeons from the various service lines (orthopedics, general surgery, neurosurgery, etc.) to drive clinical, operational and financial improvement outcomes.

The Director is responsible for convening perioperative services leaders across markets and care settings, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and system leaders (supply chain, IT, etc.) to improve patient outcomes, drive standardization, reduce surgical supply costs, improve surgical block time utilization, and support health system goals related to quality, access, experience and cost.

Responsibilities

Performance Improvement and Outcomes Monitoring :

  • Identify, implement and improve standard system surgical services KPIs (on time first case starts, same day cancellations, OR block utilization, labor productivity, etc.)
  • Assess performance gaps and work with market and system leaders to develop and execute on an improvement plan.
  • Lead supply chain initiatives to reduce cost / case, clinical variation through preference card alignment, case pack optimization, and waste reduction.
  • Utilize Epic OpTime scheduling and analytics platforms to support operational transparency and performance improvement.
  • Create a culture of quality, patient safety and high reliability.
  • Strategic and Business Development :

  • Partner with Chief Medical Officer to develop a short term (1-2 year) and long term (2-5 year) plan for Surgical Services informed by the UPH Strategic Plan.
  • Present plan to critical leadership bodies for review and alignment (Senior Team, SLG, SIOC, and CLC).
  • Surface ideas for new programs, initiatives, and technology investments.
  • Participate in workforce planning discussions with HR and operational leaders.
  • Collaborate with Director of Service Line Strategy to identify continuous growth strategies.
  • Operational Leadership :

  • Identify and implement system-wide policies for surgical and procedural operations to ensure regulatory compliance related to patient safety and accreditation standards
  • Foster and maintain effective relationships with both employed and independent surgeons / anesthesiologists by collaborating on performance improvements and matters of mutual concern, including space requirements, equipment and supplies, economics of operations, and coordination of programs and services consistent with system and market objectives.
  • Establish presence and build relationships in markets through periodic rounding with stakeholders, onsite assessments, planning activities and performance reviews
  • Qualifications

    Education :

  • Required : BSN, BA, BS
  • Preferred : MSN, MHA or MBA
  • Experience :

  • Required : Three years of management experience in a healthcare field, with at least two of the years in a position relevant to perioperative services.
  • Preferred : Five or more years in a position relevant to perioperative services.
  • License(s) / Certification(s) :

  • Required : Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Preferred : RN license strongly preferred : other clinical licensure (CRNA, ARNP, PA-C) considered with relevant leadership experience. Certification in Perioperative Services (CNOR) or Executive Leadership.
  • Other :

  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines, UPH markets and business entities to persuade others, reach consensus, and resolve conflicts.
  • Effectively manages complex interdepartmental, interdisciplinary relationships to assure collaboration and effective / efficient operations in perioperative services across the system.
  • Able to effectively lead through influence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient and family centered care.
  • Ability to create and communicate the case for change; demonstrated success with large scale change management.
