Overview

J.McLaughlin is a specialty American Sportswear and Accessories brand headquartered in New York. We are seeking a dynamic, self-starting Public Relations & Communications Manager to support both internal and external brand communications. This individual will play a critical role in shaping the brand’s narrative, securing strong media placements, supporting influencer and social communications, and driving a cohesive messaging strategy that reflects the voice and values of J.McLaughlin. This role works closely with cross-functional partners and external PR agencies to amplify the brand across owned, earned, and shared channels. This role is primarily based in our corporate office in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

About the role

Essential Functions :

  • Support and execute the overall communications strategy to elevate the J.McLaughlin brand across traditional and digital platforms
  • Collaborate with the Head of Communications to craft and pitch compelling story angles to national, regional, and trade media outlets
  • Cultivate and maintain strong media relationships across fashion, lifestyle, retail, and business press
  • Write and edit press materials including releases, media alerts, fact sheets, talking points, and executive communications
  • Develop and manage seasonal PR calendars and static communication plans that align with brand and marketing initiatives
  • Partner with outside agencies to ensure consistent brand messaging and maximize coverage opportunities
  • Collaborate with social media teams to support influencer outreach and organic storytelling on owned platforms
  • Support internal communications efforts, ensuring consistency in tone, voice, and messaging across internal touchpoints
  • Identify emerging PR trends, cultural moments, and new media opportunities for brand visibility
  • Serve as a resource and problem-solver across departments, helping turn brand moments into media moments

Additional Responsibilities :

  • What we are looking for

    This role is perfect for a thoughtful communicator with impeccable taste and a passion for brand storytelling. The ideal candidate is a connector and a doer—someone who is equally comfortable writing a press release, brainstorming a new media pitch, or briefing a stylist or editor on the nuances of our product and brand.

    Skills & Requirements :

  • Bachelors degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in PR, communications, or media relations—preferably in fashion, lifestyle, or consumer brands
  • Deep understanding of modern PR practices, media trends, and digital storytelling
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with an ability to distill complex information into clear, engaging narratives
  • Strong relationships with relevant fashion, lifestyle, and business media contacts
  • Experience managing and collaborating with outside PR and influencer agencies
  • A self-starter with high energy, creativity, and a solution-oriented mindset
  • Passionate about the J.McLaughlin brand and the customer
  • Strong aesthetic sensibility and understanding of brand voice and visual tone
  • Highly organized with an ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
