The University of Michigan is offering a 1-year advanced training opportunity in Adult Cardiac Surgery with emphasis on surgical therapies for the treatment of advanced heart failure.This position will be for the dates of July 1, to June 30, and is classified as a Clinical Instructor (faculty) role in the Department of Cardiac Surgery.The University of Michigan has a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary and internationally recognized program in the surgical management of advanced heart failure including mechanical circulatory support, heart transplant, high risk coronary revascularization, and treatment of advanced valvular disease along with strong programs in clinical outcomes research, translational research and clinical trial management. Clinical responsibilities will be based at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This role will provide the individual with training, education, and technical skills in the preoperative evaluation and planning, operative management, postoperative care and follow-up of these patients.The advanced trainee will participate in a collaborative environment that allows for a truly multidisciplinary approach to the care of each individual patient. This will occur in the setting of multidisciplinary conferences that will take place in a clinical and academic environment.

What You'll Do

  • Preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative patient care of complex adult surgical conditions, including VAD and transplant patients.
  • Treatment of emergent and non-emergent heart failure pathology utilizing medical management.
  • Serves as surgeon, commensurate with experience, on complex surgeries under the supervision of our heart failure surgeon specialists.
  • Teach other cardiothoracic surgery residents on the diagnosis and treatment of complex heart failure and surgical treatment.
  • Thoracic organ procurement, either independently or with a faculty proctor depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Additional education and scholarly pursuits as determined by the section to support the mission of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must have completed an American Board of Thoracic Surgery approved training program in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Applicants must be Board Certified or Board Eligible via the pathways stipulated by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
  • Candidates must be eligible for a medical license in the state of Michigan.
  • Candidates must be US Citizens or US Permanent Residents (Green Card) or eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
  • Candidates must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
  • Required Qualifications

    The candidate must be able to obtain a full medical license in the State of Michigan. ABTS Board certification or board eligibility is required.
