Description

The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) invites applications for a two-year curatorial research fellowship with the Museum's Initiative for Jewish Art and Culture. The fellow will conduct original research grounded in the NCMA's preeminent collection of Jewish ceremonial art and supported by the extensive library and research resources of the NCMA, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University. Projects may engage any period or region represented in or related to the global collections, which span the early modern era to the contemporary moment.

The fellow will be considered a professional member of the Museum's curatorial staff with ready access to curators, educators, conservators, and other Museum departments as well as professional development and networking opportunities across the Triangle region. The fellowship offers opportunities to present scholarship in public and academic settings and, through partnerships with the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies and the Duke Center for Jewish Studies, to participate in teaching and collaborative research. Together, these institutions form a thriving hub for Jewish studies in the Research Triangle, offering a dynamic intellectual community. In addition to conducting their own research, the fellow will collaborate with the Museum's interpretation team to support the development of educational resources that engage audiences with the collection, both in the gallery and digitally.

The Curatorial Fellow, Initiative for Jewish Art and Culture, will receive an annual salary of $45,000 plus research and travel expenses up to a maximum of $5,000 and benefits. The Fellow will be expected to work on NCMA projects for an average of 30 hours per week.

Requirements

This fellowship is open to scholars of art history, Jewish studies, or related fields. Eligible candidates must have completed all coursework and examinations required for the PhD by September 2025 and must be actively engaged in the research and writing of their dissertation. Consideration will also be given to scholars who have received their PhD within the last three years. In all cases the most competitive candidates will have an expressed interest in a museum career.

Applications must include a cover letter and the following : a statement (not exceeding 1,000 words) describing area(s) of research and potential relationships to the Museum's collections of Judaic and Jewish art; a current curriculum vitae; contact details for three references; and a copy of a published paper or other writing sample.

The candidate selected for the position must be able to pass a background screen before beginning the fellowship.
