Position Summary
The Public Health Environmental Manager oversees environmental health programs and services designed to protect community health and safety. This role involves managing environmental inspections, enforcing health and safety regulations, responding to environmental hazards, and supervising staff. The manager also works closely with government agencies, industries, and community partners to ensure compliance with environmental and public health standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Program Oversight & Management
Plan, implement, and evaluate environmental health programs (e.g., sanitation, water quality, food safety, vector control, waste management, air quality).
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal public health and environmental regulations.Investigate environmental health complaints, outbreaks, and hazards.Develop policies and procedures for effective environmental health operations.Leadership & SupervisionSupervise, train, and mentor environmental health staff, inspectors, and technicians.
Assign work schedules, review performance, and ensure quality standards.Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.Regulatory Compliance & EnforcementConduct inspections of facilities, businesses, and public spaces to ensure compliance with health codes.
Issue notices, permits, or enforcement actions as required.Collaborate with legal and regulatory bodies to resolve violations or compliance issues.Community Engagement & PartnershipsAct as liaison between the department and community stakeholders, businesses, and government agencies.
Provide education and outreach on environmental health risks and best practices.Represent the organization in community forums, public hearings, and environmental initiatives.Emergency Preparedness & ResponseLead environmental health response to public health emergencies, such as disease outbreaks, hazardous spills, or natural disasters.
Coordinate with emergency management teams to mitigate risks.Data Management & ReportingCollect, analyze, and report data on environmental health trends and program outcomes.
Prepare reports for leadership, funding agencies, and regulatory authorities.Use data to guide program improvements and policy recommendations.Budget & Resource ManagementDevelop and manage program budgets.
Ensure efficient allocation of resources, staff, and equipment.Identify grants or funding opportunities to support environmental health programs.Qualifications
Education :Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's preferred).
Experience :5+ years of progressive experience in environmental / public health.
Minimum 2-3 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.Certifications (Preferred / Required) :Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or equivalent.
Certification in food safety, water safety, or hazardous materials handling is an advantage.Skills & Competencies :Strong knowledge of environmental health laws, codes, and regulations.
Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.Proficiency in data analysis, reporting, and environmental health software.Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and stakeholders.
