Purpose of Position

Responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the police academy training programs, including teaching responsibilities and delivery of all training activities, processes, and protocols associated with the academy. Coordinates academy instructors and content specialists.

Essential Functions

• Curriculum Development : Develop and update training materials and programs to meet the evolving needs of law enforcement and adhere to state and federal standards. Stay current on law enforcement laws and best practices.
• Training and Instruction : Deliver lectures and conduct practical training exercises on various law enforcement topics, including criminal law, investigative techniques, self-defense, firearms, and physical fitness.
• Content Design : Define and document learning objectives. Create instructional material including courses, curriculum, learning guides and tools, or training materials designed to optimize learning.
• Assessment and Evaluation : Assess cadet performance through written exams and practical evaluations, providing constructive feedback for improvement.
• Mentorship : Serve as a mentor and role model for recruits, guiding on professional behavior, ethics, and community relations.
• Collaboration : Coordinate with law enforcement agencies to ensure training programs are relevant and effective, and participate in faculty meetings and professional development opportunities. Sourcing and scheduling subject matter experts for instruction.
• Policy Development : Contribute to the drafting of policies, procedures, and related guidelines for the academy to meet defined key principles and ensure compliance with external requirements.
• Supervision : Manage, monitor, and review the work of adjunct instructors to ensure training programs adhere to state and federal standards and ODOP requirements.
• Reporting and budgeting : Maintain records and reports. In collaboration with the Assistant Director, develop a budget for the academy.
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in TRS is mandatory.

A background check will be conducted on candidates under final consideration.
