What does this role look like?

The CBE understands the future of work is flexible. In this role, you are eligible to participate in a flexible work program that allows you to work remotely for up to three days a week. A minimum of two days must be in the office. At certain times, you maybe be required to work in the office more then 2 days per week based on operational requirements.

Position Description

purpose

The purpose of this position is to provide all electrical engineering aspects - design, documentation, and project administration - of new construction, major renovation and addition projects at the Calgary Board of Education (CBE).

accountability

This position is accountable to the Manager for providing and ensuring professional electrical engineering input with respect to all Calgary Board of Education buildings and projects.

major responsibilities

  • As part of a project team, serves as an electrical consultant to the work unit, providing design, documentation and project administration for the electrical (power, lighting, fire alarm), communications, security and data components for all in-house projects. Provides information and interpretation of building codes and regulations as required.
  • Produces Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings for in-house projects related to electrical design. Advises the Manager and Director on suitability of CAD software products, upgrades and customization.
  • Reviews and evaluates documentation submitted by external consultants for compliance with CBE Design Guidelines and requirements, including educational function and the approved budget and time schedule. Checks electrical designs, drawings, specifications, and shop drawings prepared by other electrical consultants. Prepares reports to these consultants identifying deficiencies and other concerns that require correction / remediation.
  • Performs necessary site inspections and advises external consultants and / or DCS staff on matters pertaining to the electrical engineering requirements (CBE and regulatory) for all new school construction and major renovation and upgrading projects.
  • Serves as a resource to staff within the work unit and other work units and departments such as Facility Renewal Services (FRS), Facility Operations Services (FOS), Information Systems Services (ISS), etc., on design and technical issues related to electrical (power, lighting, fire alarm), communications, security and data components.
  • Continuously reviews and maintains electrical specifications and guides, provincial, federal, and civic codes and regulations, as they relate to school design in order to ensure that work is performed in accordance with CBE guidelines and requirements.
  • Provides back-up engineering services and troubleshooting to Facility Renewal Services and Facility Operations Services work units to resolve technical design difficulties in maintaining and operating electrical systems of existing buildings as required.
  • Analyzes, prepares, and recommends to DCS staff, FRS staff or ISS staff on cost estimates, feasibility studies, energy-efficient systems and research on electrical fixtures and system applications. Maintains and updates the necessary technical information, cost records and other technical literature.
  • Prepares and annually updates CBE Design Guidelines. Liaises with other work units and departments (FRS, FOS, ISS, etc.) to determine changes and updates required to meet current CBE needs.
  • Meets and consults with school principals, user departments, and other customers to discuss needs, requirements, etc., of a project. Makes recommendations to the above staff for project costs, feasibility and schedule. Interprets construction drawings and specifications as required.
  • Meets and negotiates with external consultants, contractors, and City of Calgary fire inspectors on various project issues and requirements. Makes recommendations to DCS project staff for project implications, costs, etc., as a result of discussion with the above parties.
  • Advises and assists the Manager of the work unit to review and update the electrical specifications and design guidelines, in order to meet current building codes and regulations, school design and educational requirements, and other related inter-department operations.
  • Supervises the work prepared by other technical staff (technologists, coordinators, specialists) as it pertains to electrical scope to ensure the project meets functional, budgetary and scheduling requirements.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned.

qualifications

Education and Experience

  • University graduation in Electrical Engineering and current membership in the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).
  • A minimum of five years professional experience.
  • Must possess demonstrated proficiency in using CADD systems and other current, related computer-based applications.
