JOB PURPOSE
The Program Coordinator serves the needs of the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) communities at the Claremont Colleges. The full-time position holds joint responsibilities with both the Asian American Advisory Board (AdBoard) and the Intercollegiate Department of Asian American Studies (IDAAS). As a member of AdBoard, the coordinator advises and meets the needs of students from the Asian American, Pacific Islander, South Asian, Southwest Asian North Africa, communities at Pomona College through the student leadership development efforts, programs, projects and events of the Asian American Resource Center (AARC) and the Student Affairs division. The coordinator also supports community engagement classes and programming of IDAAS. The Program Coordinator provides appropriate advisory and mentoring services to students regarding personal, academic, and professional issues. This position serves as a professional staff member of the AARC on various committees across the 5-Claremont Colleges (5C) and in support of trainings, retreats, and workshops relating to the AARC’s mission. The coordinator also serves as a professional staff member for IDAAS attending departmental meetings and serving on subcommittees. To this end, the position meets the needs of faculty as they work alongside with on and off campus communities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Reporting directly to the AARC Assistant Director, the Program Coordinator performs the following essential duties and responsibilities :
1. Coordinate the 5C APIDA graduation.
2. Assist with the planning and organization of the APIDA Alternabreak with IDAAS, AARC and the Center for Asian Pacific American Students (CAPAS).
Student Affairs - Asian American Advisory Board (AdBoard)
1. Advise and meet the needs of students from the APIDA communities at the 5C’s in relation to AdBoard’s mission through student leadership development efforts, programs, projects and events of the AARC and the Student Affairs division.
2. Support and be available to the AARC for trainings or workshop opportunities.
3. Coordinate AdBoard meetings and programming efforts, handle meeting logistics, and archive AdBoard documents.
4. Develop coalitions and relationships among 5C APIDA student organizations and resource centers and develop leadership to strengthen community-building efforts.
5. Strengthen leadership development opportunities to APIDA 5C club leaders and members.
6. Create and implement longitudinal survey of APIDA students at the 5C’s.
7. Participate in and support various committees with tasks.
8. Create and maintain AdBoard member orientation.
9. Manage programming budget and supervision of student staff.
10. Write annual report.
11. Attend weekly AARC Staff meetings and AARC Staff Retreats and monthly Student Affairs division meetings.
12. Coordinate special projects / tasks and provide assistance as assigned.
Academics Affairs – IDAAS’ Community Engagement Programs
1. Maintain relationships with existing community partners and solicit prospective community partners.
2. Advise and mentor students in community-based opportunities and initiatives
3. Support curricular and project development for faculty teaching community engagement classes and those also hoping to increase students participating with off campus community.
4. Provide resources for jobs, fellowships, and internships in APIDA communities, public services, and social justice organizing.
5. Create and maintain a web-database regarding APIDA community organizations near the colleges.
6. Head the community engagement committee.
7. Organize and coordinate IDAAS senior thesis presentations.
8. Coordinate and publicize course information sessions and other departmental events (e.g., signature event, artist / activist in residence, etc.)
9. Attend monthly IDAAS meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS :
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS : The Program Coordinator must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using other skills and abilities not listed below :
1. Deploy professional skills in student development and counseling, in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
2. Proactively reach out to 5C faculty about community engagement opportunities and surrounding community-based organizations for course partnership.
3. Demonstrated effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with excellent interpersonal communication and phone manners. Must handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, tact, and a keen eye for detail while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
4. Able to operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook), associated professional software (such as CX CARS, Internet research, menu-driven databases) and social media networking. Demonstrated understanding of the use of technology to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
5. Able to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College in support of the College’s strategic vision and the division’s annual goals with a high standard of integrity and ethics.
6. Must have exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and attention to detail.
REQUIRED HOURS : The regular hours for this full-time position are 40 hours per week (divided equally between AdBoard and IDAAS) between the hours of 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Weekend and evening work hours may be required occasionally. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS :
This position is open until filled. The hourly rate for this role is between $28.50 and $30.60 per hour with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to : education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
