MGR DOCK MASTER 2

Location : Newport News, Virginia, United States

The Role

Responsible for the safety of the ship, facilities, equipment, and personnel when the incoming ships bow crosses the sill of a dry-dock. Evaluates the ships plan, capacity, or displacement and weight, and type of cargo and placement to determine size, shape, number, and placement of blocks required to support ships in dry-dock. Prepares a detailed docking plan for each docking operation. Directs assigned personnel in the assembly, positioning, and securing of blocks to floor of dry-dock. Ensures the ships force is informed as to the ships preparation, docking, weight changing, and undocking procedures and requirements. Collaborates with the ships docking officer on actions or situations pertaining to the ships condition and docking operations. Directs docking operations to include the flooding, removal of caisson, positioning of ship, replacement of caisson, and dock pump-down; inspects bottom of ship and blocks for proper fit and landing. Monitors the activities of assigned personnel in the maintenance and repair of dry-docks and pump houses.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 4 years of applicable, progressive professional and / or supervisory work experience

  • NAVSEA Drydock Safety Course Certification
  • Must have met the requirements of US Navy Mil-Std1625D(SH) & NNS SSP Y-1227
  • Must have a demonstrated knowledge of local winds, weather and tides as applicable to docking and undocking vessels
  • Must have the ability to access ships, drydock sumps, tanks caisson gates and adjacent facilities
  • Must be able to work a variable schedule including exposure to extreme weather conditions
  • Must have the ability to change shift schedules to support operations

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Bachelor's Degree to meet minimum qualifications :

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
  • Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience
  • Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience
  • High School / GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience
  • High School / GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience
