LOCATION SPECIFIC : This role will work a hybrid schedule in our Norfolk, VA office or Richmond, VA.
This position reports directly to the COO.
Hanbury is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller, a true leader to join our architecture firm and oversee all aspects of financial management, including financial compliance, corporate accounting, strategic and operational budgeting, financial reporting, and the development of internal control policies and procedures for the Accounting Department and for employees. As a key business partner, the Controller ensures our creative teams have the financial insights and systems needed to deliver impactful, mission-aligned design work. The ideal candidate will be to bring a strong background in financial leadership, and team development, preferably within a professional service or creative industry.
Job Description
Financial Leadership
- Support the COO and the firm’s Officers with strategic planning and decision-making
- Develop, manage, and monitor firm-wide project budgets and forecasts; prepare analyses and financial insights for leadership and project stakeholders
- Provide guidance through knowledge of the Company Policies, Procedures, Processes, and Internal Controls for the systems used in the identification, collection, maintenance, and retrieval of data useful for effective decision making
- Translate the finances to non-financial leaders (effective storytelling)
- Champion financial literacy within the organization (ESOP and Project Level)
- Work with the Treasurer to report to the Board on the financial aspects of the company
- Collaborate with Director of People Operations on compensation budgets
Corporate Accounting Duties
Manage cash flow, bank reconciliations, and ensure optimal financial health of the firmEnsure the accuracy and integrity of financial records by managing all core accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts receivable / payable, payroll, revenue recognition, and project accountingPrepare financial statements, including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow Statement to ensure accurate, timely and relevant information is available for management.Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirementsLead monthly, quarterly, and annual processes and ensure the timely delivery of financial statementsWork closely with project leaders to track project performance, project budgets, vendor requirements, and profitabilityDepartmental Leadership
Maintain, strengthen, and create internal controls, policies, and proceduresEvaluate and enhance accounting systems and software, including VantagePointMentor and manage accounting staff to foster professional development and team efficiencySupervises staff including assignments and job performance reviewsBe a Champion for the accounting team and ensure their work is recognizedOther duties as assignedQualifications
Master's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA, CMA, or MBA preferredProven experience as a Controller, managing a team at the highest level10+ years of experience in financial leadership, ideally in an architecture or consulting firmSolid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and professional services accountingExperience with general ledger functions and the month-end / year-end close processExcellent accounting software user and administration skillsMeaningful experience in integrating or transitioning to financial and project-based software systemsStrong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skillsExperience working collaboratively with creative teams while upholding financial best practicesExperience developing an accounting / finance teamAdditional Information
