Instructional Health Assistant Special Education

The list generated from this recruitment will be used to fill both substitute and permanent vacancies in the District.

Basic function : Under daily direction of a special education teacher or credentialed school nurse and general supervision of the school principal or designee, provides health and instructional assistance in both the classroom and off-campus areas to special education students who may have one or more orthopedic, learning, emotional and health-related disability.

Distinguishing characteristics : The classification of Instructional Health Assistant Special Education is distinguished from the other Instructional Assistants classification in that it provides health and instructional assistance to students with multiple disabilities. This position is required to assist special education teachers and credentialed school nurse in providing health assistance to students.

Examples of duties : Under the direction of certificated staff, assists in the presentation of learning materials and works with individual and small groups of children having severe disabilities in various subject matter areas to reinforce class lessons and assist students in completing class and homework assignments. Assists students with basic and special health care needs which may include assistance with washing hands and face, brushing teeth, toileting and diapering, changing clothing, feeding, oral suctioning, catheterizing and other assistance required by the individual student, and as directed by credentialed school nurse. Monitors and assists students in a variety of subject areas utilizing several instructional materials according to instruction / guidance of certificated staff. Explains basic concepts of reading, writing, arithmetic and other subjects and reinforce instruction appropriate for each student both in the classroom and off-campus as needed. Assists teachers in maintaining appropriate order and student conduct both in the classroom and off-campus as needed; responds to student outbursts and misconduct, utilizing approved behavior modification and intervention techniques in accordance with established policies and procedures. Monitors and maintains the health and safety of students with chronic and acute health needs; administers first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other health related interventions according to established policies, guidelines and protocols, and as directed by professional medical staff. Prepares, copies and distributes classroom materials and visual aids in support of instructional programs; perform general clerical duties related to classroom instruction and activities; operate standard office equipment. Operates a variety of specialized medical equipment and assistive devices including stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, syringes for gastronomy tube feedings, Pulmo-Aid for administering breathing medication, oxygen tank, ventilator / respirator and other equipment. Assists students with wheelchairs, braces and other orthopedic equipment; position and reposition students; assists students getting on and off buses; accompany students to various locations on campus. Assists speech and physical therapists, psychologists, adaptive physical education teachers and other specialists with physical developmental activities; assists students in developing cognitive, gross and fine motor skills, feeding and self-help skills, and behavior control. Attends IEP meetings to provide and obtain information for parents and students; write notes and make telephone calls to parents as requested. May assist in administering and scoring tests and pupil work as assigned; record grades on papers and in roll books as assigned. Assists in preparing exhibits, displays and bulletin boards; set up and operate audio-visual equipment and computer-assisted learning programs; operate listening center equipment as required. Assists in maintaining a neat and orderly learning environment. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications : Education : Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Experience : Two (2) years of experience working with children with special needs. Completion of two years of higher education study OR possession of an Associates or higher level degree in Child Development, Early Education, or other related field may be substituted for required experience. Language Requirements : None Licenses and Other Certifications : Valid First Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificates. Certificates are required 30 days after initial hire date and must be maintained during employment. Subject to changes in accordance with program governing agencies.
