Third Rock Consultants, LLC (Third Rock) is a Kentucky-based environmental consulting firm established in 2000 by Molly Foree Cummins, a licensed environmental attorney with a strong background in environmental planning. Our specialized services include integrative environmental planning, ecological analysis, and restoration design for federal, state, and local agencies and consulting design firms across the southeastern U.S.
Third Rock's full‑time, multidisciplinary staff of environmental planners, engineers, ecologists, geologists, environmental scientists, GIS analysts, and technical writers has prepared and coordinated all levels of environmental documentation and secured state and federal authorization for impacts to jurisdictional resources for projects ranging from local development to statewide corridor and forest planning.
Position : Environmental Technical Writer
We are currently looking for an Environmental Technical Writer, responsible for researching, developing, writing, and editing clear, accurate, and compliant technical documents related to environmental science, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. This role supports engineers, scientists, and project managers by translating complex technical data into accessible materials for regulatory agencies and clients.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and edit technical documents, impact assessments, permit applications, and proposals.
Translate scientific and engineering data into clear, accurate, and readable documentation.
Collaborate with subject‑matter experts to obtain and verify technical information.
Maintain consistent style, tone, and formatting according to company or client standards.
Manage document version control and submission tracking for regulatory and client deliverables.
Support the preparation of presentations, public outreach and educational materials.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree required (English, Science, Technical Communication or related field).
Master’s degree preferred (optional).
Experience
2-5 years of experience in technical writing in the environmental, engineering, or scientific fields.
Familiarity with environmental regulations, compliance standards, and permitting processes.
Skills
Excellent written, organizational, and verbal communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to synthesize complex information into concise, well‑organized documents.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft and Adobe software.
Familiarity with GIS data, environmental modeling outputs, or data visualization tools.
