Deputy District Attorney

THE POSITION

Washington County, the safest urban county in Oregon, is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy District Attorney I, II, III, or IV. These positions will be in our misdemeanor or felony criminal units, depending on experience. Our DDAs are responsible for all aspects of case prosecution including charging decisions, case management, negotiations, and trials.

In addition to safe neighborhoods and top-rated schools, Washington County is home to companies like Nike, Intel, and Columbia Sportswear. We stretch from the western boundary of Portland to the Coast Range, and include the cities of Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, and Forest Grove. We are close enough to Portland to feel urban, but distant enough - both in proximity and philosophy - to have our own unique identity.

In the District Attorney's office, we still believe in principle of accountability. We prosecute all crimes, from low-level misdemeanors to the most serious felonies. We aggressively prosecute violent crimes and repeat offenders, but offer various treatment courts in certain situations. We enjoy good working relationships with the courts and defense bar.

Annual cost-of-living pay increases are routine and merit-based salary increases are common. Our DDA I to IV salary range is currently $106,000 to $211,000. Salary offers for these positions will depend on experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

1. Preparation for trial and prosecution of misdemeanor, major traffic, juvenile and non-support cases. May also prosecute felony cases in Circuit Court.

2. Review of police reports and consultation with witnesses in misdemeanor, juvenile and felony cases to determine whether a criminal charge should be issued.

3. Contact, interview and schedule witnesses for court appearances.

4. Consult with victims to discuss and explain the details of the case.

5. Assists in creating a positive and supportive work environment; enforces a safe workplace; establishes a culture of teamwork and communication; creates a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace diversity, equity and inclusion and actively promotes an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.

6. Negotiate the resolution of cases with defense attorneys.

7. Establish paternity orders inter- and intra-state in both judicial and administrative forums; respond to requests from other states to establish interstate support orders. Establish and modify child support orders.

8. Represent Children's Services Division in juvenile dependency cases; may advise juvenile counselors in resolving juvenile cases.

9. May be assigned to special projects (post-conviction relief, domestic violence cases).

10. May teach seminars to police agencies about traffic, juvenile, misdemeanor, and family abuse restraining order laws and procedures.

11. May provide on-call advice to police agencies during non-working hours.

12. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be through training and experience in criminal, civil and juvenile law.
