A Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory Project Coordinator position is available with Colorado State University to be located in the Geologic Resources Division of the National Park Service which is based in Lakewood, Colorado (or remotely). The incumbent of this position is a member of the core team responsible for carrying out the Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory where many parks lack sufficient staff to collect, manage, and synthesize scientific information needed to manage geologic resources and geologic hazards.
This position will be based in Lakewood, CO or remotely. Within easy reach are myriad trails for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife watching, horseback riding, and back-country skiing on a plethora of public lands, including nearby National Parks, Forests, and Grasslands, and countless local natural areas. Denver also has a vibrant cultural scene, with many options for enjoying theater productions, music events, annual festivals, museums, art galleries, restaurants, gardens, and more.
The incumbent coordinates the activities involved with all phases of geologic and soil inventory projects. The incumbent provides direction, oversight, and guidance in the management and dissemination of inventory and monitoring-related information. This program may include, but is not limited to soils, geology, hydrology, paleontology, geothermal features and activity, caves and karst, erosion, natural hazards. The incumbent will need to have professional level experience in being able to perform and evaluate scientific work in natural resource management and work involving the analysis of geologic and soils data to address resource protection and mitigate the impacts of geologic hazards. The incumbent leads the effort to develop geologic reports which help guide parks in the management of their most pressing geologic resource stewardship issues and aid in the interpretation of digital geologic maps. Required Job Qualifications + 5 years related experience, or MA + 2 years experience, or PhD.
- Expert professional knowledge of geology and geologic resource management on public lands.
- Professional experience developing and reviewing reports for geologic resource management.
- Mastery of scientific inventory project principles and research techniques.
- Ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and provide leadership to a team of scientists, data managers, and technical specialists in all phases of complex, multi-year projects of various spatial scales.
- Ability to manage long-term projects designed to inventory key geologic resources at park units.
- Advanced professional knowledge and skill in geologic data analysis and synthesis to develop understanding of, and solutions to, geologic resource problems.
- Knowledge of the laws pertaining to geologic and soil resources.
- Ability to prepare reports and journal articles of high scientific credibility, and to share pertinent information effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to make oral presentations that are well designed, informative, and clearly convey the intended message.
- Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
Preferred education is a Master of Science in geology.At least one year of experience with geologic and / or soil resource management in National Parks or other public lands.Knowledge of geologic and soil resource-related Department of Interior National Park Service Management Policies and service-specific manuals, instructions, and / or directors orders.Ability to create or supervise the creation of science communication products from geologic and soil inventory projects and disseminate appropriately.Thorough understanding of laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines related to NPS natural resource inventory and monitoring and the protection of the nations natural and cultural resources.Skill in oral and written communication to ensure that inventory reports are well written and easily understood.Essential Duties Job Duty Category Geologic and Soil Resource Inventories Project Management Duty / Responsibility Project management for the Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory includes providing leadership, coordination, technical direction, and oversight to the implementation of geologic and soil inventory projects :
Serves as a geologic and soil resources inventory project manager and as part of the NPS Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory team.Drafts, reviews, and approves Detailed Implementation Plans (Scopes of Work).Coordinates with outside Principal Investigators on geology and soil inventory projects.Sets the schedule and priorities for remaining baseline report production by consulting the program lead and short-term action plan. Communicates the schedule and assignments to the team.Schedules project kick-off calls and progress check-ins to ensure the inventory project is fulfilling the program requirements.Tracks the status of baseline deliverables in an existing tracking spreadsheet and schedules progress check-ins with writers and park staffReviews draft deliverables and provides specific direction to project team on needed revisions to ensure that technical geologic content and geologic policies are accurately presented.Acts as peer-review manager, facilitating peer review of reports and other products as appropriate.Supervise field work when appropriateManages production and distribution of deliverables including publishing to the NPS Science Report series, uploading to the NPS DataStore, adding to webpages / SharePoint, and distribution to parks and contributors to share results of inventory projects.Conducts project close-out functions.Percentage Of Time 60% Job Duty Category Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory Program Support Duty / Responsibility
Program Support includes the following duties, all of which serve to inform internal and external audiences of project status and accomplishments for the Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory team.Communicates with the Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory lead on a weekly basis with project status and updates.Submits a written monthly update to the Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory lead that lists the status of all in-progress projects and the current activities of all co-supervised team members.Responds to internal and external Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory inquiries.Contributes to the agenda for annual team meetings.Provides geologic and soil inventory content for use on public websites or internal SharePoint sites.Provides project status content for annual, end of year reporting.Percentage Of Time 20% Job Duty Category Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory Project Development Duty / Responsibility The following duties will support the development of geology and soil inventory projects :
