Environmental Campaign Assistant Director
role at
Fund for the Public Interest
We’re hiring and training Canvass Directors to make an impact on some of the most important problems of our time – such as protecting wildlife and wild places, eliminating plastic waste that is polluting our oceans, ensuring clean air and water, and more. We believe that achieving positive change requires educating, engaging, and mobilizing people across the country. Directors and their staff build public support through one‑on‑one, face‑to‑face conversations on America’s front doorsteps, generating a lasting support that goes deeper than an online petition. This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions of significance. We have immediate positions available as well as positions starting throughout the year.
Responsibilities
Educate and engage the public on campaigns like protecting wildlife and the outdoors, moving beyond single‑use plastics, and stopping electronic waste
Build support and fundraise for leading non‑profit groups working on these issues, including Environment America and PIRG
Hire, train and manage your own team
Work at the most effective citizen outreach operation in the country, raising over $700 million for environmental and public interest organizations and mobilizing millions of people on important issues
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have leadership experience, excellent communication skills, and who want to work hard to make lasting, positive change on important issues. Being a Canvass Director requires working independently, exercising good judgment, and meeting staffing, campaign, and fieldwork goals.
Training
We have an excellent training program that starts with hands‑on training in an existing canvass office and classroom‑style training on social change concepts and skills. Throughout the year, new and experienced canvass directors may participate in advanced trainings on staff management, canvassing, campaign strategy, and other skills.
Locations
We work on campaigns where the impact is greatest. Directors may work almost anywhere in the country and must be geographically flexible. Current campaigns are in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Minnesota, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and California.
Pay and Benefits
The target annual compensation is $38,250‑$53,750, depending on position and location. The Fund offers medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, paid sick time, vacation time, a commuter benefit program, 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long‑term disability insurance, and may include student loan assistance. Training and opportunities for advancement are also provided.
