Specialty Nurse
Provides direct patient care in an area designated as a specialty unit in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and with the policies, values, and mission of the organization.
Responsibilities include evaluating learning needs of the patient and, or family and providing patient and family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances. Effectively delegates patient care to ancillary personnel. May precept student nurses and new hires. Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care based on patient assessment to optimize outcomes and maximize available resources. Monitors, documents, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including disposition, referral, and spiritual and, or psychosocial support needs.
Competencies include accountability, customer service, development and implementation of plan of care, knowledge of disease process, organization skills, patient and family centered care, patient safety - nursing, problem solving - patient care, responding to change, and standards of behavior.
Education and certification requirements include an accredited nursing program, ACLS and BLS certifications from the American Heart Association, and a registered nurse license from the State of Florida.
Additional job information includes the complexity of work, which requires critical thinking skills, effective communication skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Required work experience includes one year of nursing experience. Department specific credentials include the ONCC Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Certificate for those RNs administering chemotherapy, APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider card required within 12 months of hire for those RNs administering chemotherapy for oncologic indication within the pediatric setting, and PALS and NRP certifications for specific areas.
Working conditions and physical requirements include exposure to asbestos, audible speech, bending and stooping, bio hazardous waste, biological hazards, blood and / or bodily fluids, climbing, communicable diseases and / or pathogens, computer monitor, cytotoxic chemicals, depth perception, distinguishing color, domestic animals, dust, fire risk, gas / vapors / fumes, hazardous chemicals, hazardous medication, hearing acuity, heating devices, hypoxia, keyboard entry, kneeling, magnetic fields, moving mechanical parts, needles / sharp objects, potential electric shock, potential for physical assault, pushing or pulling, radiation, reaching, repetitive movement, running, seeing - far and near, sitting, smelling acuity, squatting, standing, sudden decompression during flights, taste discrimination, unprotected heights, walking, and wet or slippery surfaces.
