  • DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

    Supervise employees and evaluate team performance. Provide new employee orientation. Train or provide adequate training for employees. Coach, counsel, and motivate employees. Investigate complaints or performance concerns, and implement disciplinary actions as needed and in consultation with Employee Relations.

    Provide and document stroke nursing care to include all components of the

    nursing process in accordance with written clinical and administrative

    procedures.

    Assess the needs for policies, procedures, and protocols relating to the care of stroke patients in coordination with the medical directors, hospital administration, and clinicians.

    Coordinate with physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff to evaluate and

    address specific patient care issues.

    Coordinate the development and implementation of clinical pathways for stroke patient populations, incorporating members from the multi-disciplinary team.

    Develop policies and procedures based on input from clinicians and other resources, such as data from patient care evaluations.

    Coordinate, develop, and implement orientation, nursing education, and

    in-service programs related to the care and management of stroke patients in conjunction with the Continuing Education Department.

    Direct community stroke education and prevention programs by developing, implementing, and evaluating programs for targeted populations in the city and surrounding communities related to stroke prevention and other topics identified through a needs assessment for the community.

    Maintain a comprehensive stroke center designation from the national hospital accrediting agency of MU Health Care's choice.

    Participate in resident and neurology patient rounding.

    Assist the medical directors and hospital administration in the development,

    implementation, and evaluation of a quality plan, which is multi-disciplinary and patient outcomes-focused.

    Coordinate the identification, investigation, reporting, and follow-up of

    incidents and quality issues throughout the program while maintaining confidentiality.

    Manage the operational, personnel, and financial aspects of the Stroke Program.

    Oversee the collection, coding, scoring, and development of processes for

    validation of data entered into the stroke registry.

    Continue improvement to the stroke registry to facilitate performance improvement activities, trend reports, and research while protecting confidentiality.

    Serve as a resource for staff in all departments to network in order to provide high-quality stroke patient care and act as a liaison for Emergency Medical Services agencies and the community.

    Participate in the development of stroke care systems at the community, state, and national levels.

    Participate in mandatory educational activities relating to stroke care.

    Participate in case review.

    Represent the Stroke Program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal stroke care management.

    May participate in research selection, analysis, and distribution of findings,

    and facilitate protocol design for accurate data collection, feedback, and

    analysis.

    Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules to ensure the

    appropriate level of unit coverage and continuity of care.

    Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and

    practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal / approval for

    payroll purposes.

    May complete unit / department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Missouri Board of Nursing RN or Nurse Licensure Compact multi-state RN. When primary state of residency changes, compact state RNs must apply under new state of residency within thirty (30) days.

    Three (3) years of RN experience.

    National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification within one (1) year as a condition of continued employment in this job classification.

    Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN) certification by the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing (ABNN) within one (1) year as a condition of continued employment in this job classification.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is strongly preferred.

    Master of Science in Nursing degree.

    Two (2) years of stroke nursing experience.

    Healthcare management experience.

    Research experience.

    Additional license / certification requirements as determined by the hiring

    department.
